B0ackground:
One day my dad bet me to enter a small supercross race at the local fair...and
I crashed 4 times. After that day, baseball didn't seem so much fun anymore!
I spent about a year going to the small fairgrounds races to learn the
sport and now I race the larger AMA races in Michigan and Indiana.
These races require 2 races of 5 laps and about 1.5 miles per lap.
A = Pro/semi pro, B = very good riders, C = beginner and novice. I'm at the
top 5 of the C class and will go to B later this year. Usually there are 30
to 40 riders at the mass start, all charging to the first turn called the hole
shot. Every one is handle bar to handlebar at full throttle! It gets kinda
scary after the first 20 yards because we all want to get away from all the
flying crud and the first ones out of the corner can really put distance between
the pack, not to mention less chance for a crash.
Depending on the weather, it can be a mud bog or a dusty desert on the tracks
and conditioning is often the most important part of racing.
Since I'm also a 6'2" basketball player, I was losing to guys on my 125
that were 30 pounds less than me, so we bought the biggest baddest bike for
2003 and it's awesome to finally have all the power I need. It's a 4 stroke
and it's so loud, the neighbors are getting some free Jones Soda to keep them
quiet.

Hi y'all, Just back from a Kentucky race with Mitch and
we encountered a lot of Jones fans! We handed out a few calendars
to spring breakers in the Cincinatti traffic jam from our truck
window and then we were mildly surprised to know you had slipped
into the moonshine country of Kentucky. The track owners and many
racers all asked us about the logos on our trucks, the folks in
the restaurants would stop and chat. Mitch was very proud. We took
a mixed case of drinks as it was only a practice weekend and we
gave it to the track owners and some folks next to us. Should have
seen the 5 year old that was crying because he took last and knew
his mom (bad mommy!) was mad. One Green Apple soda and he forgot
everything, she was still rather grumpy, though. 1 / 03 / 03
Started
riding in the new indoor practice track by my dad's office. It snows up here
in Michigan but it's 65 degrees inside the track. Now the Michigan Mafia
(that's what they call us up here because we ride for only 5 months a year)
will be even better. I helped get Jones hooked up at the track and now all
my buds are Jones fans.
Basketball for JV's ends March 1 and then I can start the racing again. I'm
going to enter the 250C classes and try to move out of the Michigan district
to regionals in Kentucky and maybe to the National at Loretta Lynn's ranch. - Wish
me luck. Talk to ya later. |
